Why are people protesting CAA ?

Protestants believe that the CAA will lead to discrimination against the Muslims residing in India. After all India is the world’s third largest Muslim country. Actually, the fear is because of NCR or National Register of Citizens. The NCR was implemented in Assam on Supreme Court orders. It identifies and eliminated illegal immigrants. NCR was Assam’s longstanding demand. But now after its implementation there has been a growing demand to implement it across the whole country. So, Muslims feel that CAA and NCR together are lethal combination that will target Muslims. “The law is a flagrant manifestation of discriminatory intent, designed with the explicit purpose of discriminating, dispossessing, and disenfranchising Indian Muslims. Its insidious aim becomes glaringly apparent when considered alongside the propose the proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens,” said Mohammed Jawad, IAMC president.

What CAA supporter say?

So, CAA is not aimed to target any religious group. The sole purpose is to allow people to call the country their home where they live and work. These people were under threat for their lives when they decided to flee here, this act merely helps them feel at home. People are praising the Prime Ministers move calling it, ” This is a pathway towards peace. This is a true act of democracy.” “India’s Citizenship Amendment Act is long overdue and necessary. It protects some of the most vulnerable refugees in India, granting them the human rights they were denied in their home country, and the clear and expedited path to citizenship needed for them to begin rebuilding their lives,” said Hindu American Foundation (HAF) executive director Suhag Shukla.
