Sonam Wangchuk ‘s Hunger Strike for Ladakh’s Rights – Day 21

Advocating for Ladakh's Constitutional Recognition and Development

Sonam Wangchuk has been fasting since March 6. His main demand is to give Ladakh a special status in the constitution. He says the government promised this four years ago but hasn’t fulfilled it. Despite freezing temperatures, Sonam is only drinking water and salt for his protest.

He recently said he plans to march to the borders with other activists to show the world what’s really happening. On March 24, the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) joined Sonam’s protest and hunger strike.

Sonam wants Ladakh to become a full state, job opportunities reserved for locals, one parliamentary seat for Leh and Kargil each, and special rights under the constitution. He’s been on a hunger strike in Leh for 20 days, and more people are joining him despite the cold.

After Article 370 was removed from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, both regions lost their special powers. Jammu and Kashmir became a union territory, and Ladakh became centrally controlled. Sonam says this means decisions about Ladakh are made in Delhi, leading to environmental damage and neglect of local development.
