Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya, also known simply as “Shambhavi Mahamudra,” is a special 21-minute practice that combines various yoga techniques like postures, breathing exercises, hand gestures, chanting, and meditation. It was created by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a well-known yoga teacher in India, and is taught through the Isha Foundation, a nonprofit organization led by Sadhguru.

To learn Shambhavi Mahamudra, you first need to complete a program called “Inner Engineering” offered by Isha Foundation. This program provides the necessary basics over seven sessions, each lasting 90 minutes. After completing Inner Engineering, Sadhguru initiates you into Shambhavi Mahamudra during a program called “Inner Engineering Completion.”

Even beginners can learn Shambhavi Mahamudra by taking both Inner Engineering programs consecutively. It typically takes 4 to 7 days to complete both programs, either online or at an Isha Yoga Center.

How to do Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya ?

1. Start with three preparatory yoga poses: Butterfly pose, Rock the Baby pose, and Cat stretch. Do each pose gently for 5 minutes.
2. Sit cross-legged in Siddhasana (accomplished pose) and practice Sukha Kriya or Nadi Shodhana Pranayama for 6 to 7 minutes.
3. Chant the sound “AUM” loudly 21 times while breathing deeply and holding the Gyan mudra hand gesture.
4. Do fast-paced Bhastrika pranayama (Fluttering Breath) for 3 to 4 minutes.
5. After Bhastrika, hold your breath (Kumbhaka) and engage the three bandhas (muscular locks): first the pelvic floor, then the lower abdomen, and finally the throat.

6. Release the throat lock, slightly lift your head, close your eyes, and focus on the space between your eyebrows, similar to basic Shambhavi Mudra but with closed eyes. This is the main practice.
7. End with a 5-minute Vipassana meditation, focusing on your breath and being present.
8. Stay in a meditative posture for a few moments before slowly opening your eyes.
