What is Whooping Cough?
Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is a very contagious lung infection mostly caused by a bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. When someone with the infection coughs or sneezes, tiny droplets with the bacteria can spread to others, passing on the illness.
The bacteria spread when people have close contact with the infected person’s spit or mucus. When someone breathes in these bacteria, they stick to the wet lining of their lungs and throat. This causes swelling and leads to the symptoms.
